LCIF and China Relief

This is from immediate past international president Jimmy Ross , forwarded by PDG Jack Mauller.

Dear Fellow Lions,

I would like to update you on Lions Clubs International Foundation's and Lions' response to the massive earthquake in on May 12.

LCIF and Lions around the world are mobilizing more than US$2 million in funding and relief supplies. Within 48 hours LCIF committed a major catastrophe grant of US$500,000. Lion= in District 381 Guangdong in mainland China<=st1:country-region> have raised more than US$450,000 and relief material including food and medicine, Lions in District 380 Shenzhen in mainland China have raised US$250,000 & relief material of US$200,000 and Lions in District 303 Hong Kong and Macau have raised US$160,000.

A team of 40 Lions from Districts 381 and 380 traveled to Sichuan province to assist with hands-on relief efforts and the immediate and emerging needs of victims. The Lions are still in the area, disbursing relief materials including tents, medicine and food. Working with the Chinese Red Cross, Lion= purchased 10 relief vehicles and ambulances.

An organizing committee comprised of Lions from Districts 380, 381 and 303 and the China Council of Lions Clubs has been formed in order to plan and coordinate efficiently on t=e relief project. An immediate and long-term relief plan is being developed by local Lions to involve four stages: rescue, support, resettlement and reconstruction. Lions are planning to establish Lions 'tent' cities using 80= family size tents. Swedish Lions helped supply the tents and are also contributing 3,000 blankets.

To support immediate and long-term needs, Lions around the world are responding. A designated LCIF account has been established to help channel donations for this disaster. Donations can be made online at www.lcif.org/donate noting “Lions China Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund” in the comments section.

Lions of Ethiopia have donated $10,000; Chinese clubs in Vancouver, Canada expect to collect $100,000; and Taiwan Lions have committed $50,000. Lions in Brazil have partnered with a local company to provide 7,000 blankets. Many Lions are also helping by sharing this news with fellow Lions and the media.

Frequent and massive aftershocks have caused further damages and casualties from the tremor. There remain significant and varying needs. As in past large-scale disasters, Lion= are on the ground now and are also steadfastly committed to long-term relief and reconstruction. Days, week and months from now Lions will continue to provide aid. There is a great need for tents since many houses were toppled =n the quake and the rainy season has begun. Generators and water purifying machines are also in urgent need and will be well-utilized. Lions are using immediate funds to purchase these items and are also requesting assistance t= obtain these items. Chinese Lions and victims of the earthquake know they can count on Lions’ support to help as long as it takes to rebuild structures and rebuild lives.

LCIF is in constant contact with local Lions to determine the best immediate and long-term response. These regular updates are being posted on the LCIF Web site in order to keep Lions and the general public up-to-date on the latest news and response efforts.

Lions and LCIF's efforts have not gone unnoticed. News of the relief being provided has appeared on AOL,  Forbes, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Daily Herald and several other national newspapers around the world, including seven major daily papers in China.

LCIF and Lions in China thank you for your continuous support for the victims in the affected areas.  LCI= and Lions are proving the international humanitarian good we can accomplish together.

Together 'We Serve,

Jimmy Ross

LCIF Chairperson

By Rod Wallace, Pics courtesy Tom Brown

On Tuesday, April 15th, the Anaheim Lions Club presented $ 1,000.00 to the Anaheim Youth of the Year Miss. Layla Gonzalez, from Loara High School.  The two Runner-ups, Wendy Chen (Anaheim High School), and Carmen Cervantes (Oxford High School) received each $ 500.00.

The youth of the year is chosen based upon his or her service to the community of Anaheim outside school activities. 5 Lions from our club interviewed about 20 applicants chosen among the achievers in the Anaheim School district. Thanks to Lions Rod Wallace (chair), President Dr. Robert Mokbel, Lion Nina Erickson, Lion Tom Brown And Lion Duane Stout

The Youth of the Year presentation is given at the City of Anaheim Annual Youth In Government Luncheon. The Anaheim Lions, Sponsors the event. We first gave an award of $ 400.00 to the Youth of the Year only in 1981. It is a satisfying experience to meet all these wonderful students who do such great service to their community.

This is a great community recognition project and is suggested that Lions Clubs in other communities consider similar programs with their City Governments.

Wishland Foundation At the Park

By Rod Wallace, Pics by Tom Brown

As you know our club was a major sponsor on April 19  at Featherly Park, we Had  Boot from 11:00 AM  to 4:00 PM, we donated $ 500.00 to the program.

I understand that tom brown was judging or tasting some kind of a contest, he must enjoy that kind of stuffing, good job Tom Just no Pictures to prove it.

Wishland partners with wish-granting organizations from all over the world when a child’s one special “wish” is to come to visit one of Southern California’s favorite attractions.  It has the full support of Disneyland and free access for the end-Stage Terminally Ill Children and their families.  We are not just talking extremely ill, we are talking End of Life wish granting.

Wishland also offers many programs specifically for local Southern California families; think Respite Care, Bereavement Counseling, Funeral Planning Assistance, etc.

Wishland was founded by a local mother, Laurie Kotas.  Her inspiration to start Wishland began after her daughter, Kristie, passed away from leukemia. It was Kristie’s love of life, that inspired Laurie to reach out to other families going through this difficult time in their lives.  Wishland is in Anaheim and if you want a great program, you can call 714-881-0349 and ask for Kelleigh Strobel.

Pancake Breakfast Update, By Trisha Throop

Our May 10th Beckman High School Pancake Breakfast in Irvine was a wonderful event!  The event coordinators from Beckman were expecting around 600 participants at their annual fundraiser for Sports Boosters.  We brought our Lion’s banner and set up shop early near the campus courtyard.  All of our equipment was in good working order, and our Lions were in tip top bright and smiling shape!  There was live entertainment at the event including the school jazz band, the dance team, and the cheerleaders—who are always fun to watch.  There was even a pancake eating contest at 9:45 a.m.

Throughout the morning our teamwork was like clockwork, everybody attended their own station and did an excellent job keeping pace with the crowds.  Tom Brown had time to do some trailer improvements including affixing the First Aid Kit and fire extinguisher to the trailer wall.  We made an inventory shopping list of the items and supplies we need to stock up.  Thanks to everyone for an awesome pancake breakfast!

In attendance were: Bob Jones, Jerry Majer, Tom Brown, Don Schilling, Duane Stout, Susie Snider, Bob & Nina Erickson, Rod Wallace and Trisha Throop.

Dental Clinic in Nicaragua, Dr Robert Mokbel

For a few years now I have been involved with Ayuda. Ayuda is an organization  that provides free dental care to the needy, Ayuda is comprised of Volunteers doctors mostly teachers at USC, School of Dentistry. Dr H. Done the director and part founder of this organization has been at it since 1986.

Every year Ayuda goes to a third world country and provides free dental care to needy children and adults as well. This Year we went to Nicaragua, to a remote area called Ocotal. Every day, we had to drive to a remote village where we setup the Dental clinic in a middle school. 6 USC doctors and 42 students, treated over 650 child and worked 14 hours a day. The living conditions of these poor people were like nothing I have ever seen or imagine, They had no running water  and they had very few luxuries.
